Guided Overnight Hikes

Every trip is planned according to the Guests fitness levels, there are no regular departures, advance bookings are essential.

Ever thought of sleeping under the stars or in one of many caves in the amazing Drakensberg mountains. This should be on your next to do list. Inkosana Berg Lodge offers guided overnight hikes ranging from one to four nights. Our guide is CATHSSETA accredited and a licensed overnight guide.
INKOSANA mountain guide has many years experience in the mountains as he lived in close proximity to the Drakensberg mountain and was born in the area. He has a vast amount of knowledge on flora, fauna, rock art and the ability to predict sudden weather changes. His skills are of great value and our guests can be rest assured they are in great hands.
Hiking trails range from day hikes, overnight upto 4 nights for the more experienced, hiking trails are from easy to moderate to very strenuous.

Your experience and level of fitness will depend on what hike will suite you best. You will require personal gear, back packs, tents, sleeping bags and mats, equipment can be hired from the lodge.  The price excludes park entrance fee, food, insurance and pick up fee if the hike ends in a different valley. The price is per person per day. A deposit is required upon booking only then will the guides me reserved.

Please note that each trip has to be tailor-made, we need as much warning as possible to make sure the guide is available, a minimum pax of two hikers is required. A minimum of six hikers will be required for the Amphitheatre for peace of mind and safety.

2 Day Hike

(A) and (B) Moderate, (C) Strenuous

A) MODERATE

DAY ONE: From Monk’s Cowl park entrance to Blind Man’s Corner and on to Zulu Cave 12.5km 600m.   DAY TWO:  Return via Jacobs Ladder and Blue Grotto 19km

B) MODERATE

DAY ONE: From Monk’s Cowl to Blind Man’s Corner on to Stable Cave 19km 600m                                DAY TWO:     Return via Vaalribbokkop and Culfargie 12km

C) MODERATE

DAY ONE:  From Monk’s Cowl to Blind Man’s Corner, continue to Wonder Valley Cave.                              DAY TWO:  Trek back to Monk’s Cowl.

D) STRENUOUS

DAY ONE:  From Monk’s Cowl to Keith Bush Camp below Champagne Castle13.5km 850m                   DAY TWO:      Return the same way or via Makurumani forest

3 Day Hike

(A) Moderate (B) and (C) Strenuous (D) Very Strenuous

A). MODERATE

DAY ONE:  Monk’s Cowl to Blind Man’s Corner onto Zulu Cave 12.5 km 600m                                         DAY TWO:      From Zulu Cave to the Mlwazini river valley and up to Stable Cave 9km                                 DAY THREE:  descend via Jacob’s Ladder to Blue Grotto 9km

B).  STRENUOUS 

DAY ONE:   Monk’s Cowl to Keith Bush Camp 13.5 km 850m                                                                           DAY TWO:   Head up Gray’s Pass to Champagne Castle camp near the summit 2.5km 1000m               DAY THREE:   Return the same way to Monk’s Cowl

C).  STRENUOUS

DAY ONE:   Monk’s Cowl to Stable Cave via Jacob’s ladder 15km 500m                                                       DAY TWO:   Hike down through the beautiful gorge, camp at river near Philip’s Folly 20km                      DAY THREE:  Hike to the top of Mikes Pass. Pickup at Didima 20km

D). VERY STRENUOUS

DAY ONE:  Monk’s Cowl to Schoongezicht Cave along the contour path 30km                                         DAY TWO: Follow the Mhlawazine Gorge, camp at Leopard Cave 10km                                                   DAY THREE:  Return via Eagle Gorge and descend Jacob’s Ladder to Drakensberg Sun 20km

4 Day Hike

Very Strenuous Hikes

A).  VERY STRENUOUS

DAY ONE:  Ascend Jacob’s Ladder to the top of Van Dam’s Cascades on the Little ‘Berg                         DAY TWO:   Traverse via Blind Man’s corner to Keith Bush Camp at the base of Champagne Castle Peak. DAY THREE: Ascend Gray’s Pass and camp near the summit above 3200m.                                             DAY FOUR:  Return to Monks Cowl

B) By going directly to Keith Bush on the first day one can return on days 3 and 4 via Ship’s Prow Pass

C) It is also possible to do Mafadi, the highest point in South Africa, via Leslies Pass from Injisuthi Camp

D) A great 4 day hike is to the summit Giant’s Castle via Langalibalele Pass and return via Giant’s Pass

These are all strenuous hikes for the fit and experienced, expect long days and steep ascents.

5 Day Hike

Lead by INKOSANA Berg Lodge Guide

A guided walk including a number of waterfalls, rock pools, bushman painting, caves, passes and peaks.  This is the ultimate 4 Night 5 Day walk starting from Monks Cowl, Jacobs Ladder, Cascades for a swim and over to Stable Cave for you first night in the mountain.  Day 2:  Continue    to Keith Bush Camp. Day 3 Hike up Grays pass and camp at Nkosazana Cave. Day 4: Summit to Champagne Castle Peak and trek to Zulu cave for the last night. Day 5: Hike back to Monks Cowl.
